What is discrimination?

We understand discrimination as illegitimate unequal treatment (for example favouritism, disadvantage) of people, in particular on the basis of ethnic origin, gender, religion or ideology, disability, chronic illness, age and sexual identity. The existence of discrimination is independent of whether the unequal treatment is intentional.

You can also turn to the Helpdesk in cases of antisemitism: Contact persons with specific expertise are available for advice and help. Further information on the officers for antisemitism can be found here.

Detailed information on the different dimensions of discrimination can be found on the website of the Coordination Centre for Diversity.

Guiding questions

  • Have I been treated differently from other people in the same situation and does the reason for the unequal treatment seem inappropriate to me?

  • Is the reason for the unequal treatment linked to a presumed characteristic of mine, e.g. my origin?

If you are unsure, you are also welcome to contact the JMU Anti-Discrimination Helpdesk (anonymously or in person). We can advise you anonymously via the chat function of the online portal. You can also choose to speak to us in person at any time.

Further information on possible steps to be taken in the event of discrimination at JMU is currently being finalised in the policy on principles for dealing with discrimination . When the policy is published, we will publish detailed information on its content, including the procedural principles, here.

Further information, assistance and materials on sexual harassment (at universities) can be found under the tab "Directory of various contact points"
