As the oldest Bavarian university, JMU can look back on a long history. Founded in 1402, it was and is not only a place of work and teaching for outstanding scientists, but also the home of a large university family and last but not least - the scene of its history.

Why are we called JMU?

With its name, the University of Würzburg honors two formative personalities. On the one hand, its second founder Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (who renewed the founding privilege in 1582) and, on the other hand, the first Bavarian King, Maximilian I. Joseph of Bavaria (1756-1825), who, together with Count Maximilian Joseph von Montgelas, reformed all areas of public life in Bavaria between 1803 and 1806, an urgently needed step after the expansion of Bavarian territory through mediatization and secularization.
