German Nationals Holding Higher Education Entrance Qualifications Awarded by Non-German Institutions
Holders of a higher education entrance qualification that was awarded by a non-German institution should find out as soon as possible whether they qualify for admission to the University of Würzburg.
Please note:
The information provided on this page applies only to qualifications awarded to German nationals by non-German institutions.
If you are not a national of Germany, please read the information provided on the pages of the International Office of the University of Würzburg.
Recognition of qualifications
As a rule, only those qualifications can be recognised that allow entry to higher education in the country in which they were awarded.
The body responsible for the recognition of qualifications is either the
- Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle (Office for the Recognition of Non-Bavarian Certificates and Diplomas) for the Free State of Bavaria in Munich (postal address: Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle für den Freistaat Bayern, Postfach 40 20 40, 80720 München) or
- - if you have decided on a programme already - the university to which you are planning to apply or at which you are planning to enrol; if circumstances require, the university will consult with Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle.
We usually check whether you qualify for admission to the University of Würzburg after we have received your application for admission or your application for enrolment.
Since, due to the large number of applications we receive, the process may take some time and we might have to consult with Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle, we recommend, however, that you send us your certificates before you submit your official application so that we can conduct a pre-application review.
(To find out if admission to the programme of your choice is restricted and read more about the application process and deadlines, go to Application and Enrolment.)
To request a pre-application review of your certificates, please use the form you can download here (available in German only). A pre-appliciation review can only be requested concerning undergraduate programmes (Bachelor’s, state examination). If you are holding an undergraduate degree and seek admission to a Master’s programme, the review for admission takes place as part of the master's application process.
To allow enough time to take any actions that may be necessary (sign up for the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) exam or apply for admission to a Studienkolleg school), please submit your request for a pre-application review within the deadlines indicated below:
- Programmes with local admission restrictions:
by 15 June (for winter intake) or 15 December (for summer intake) - Programmes with unrestricted admission:
by 1 August (for winter intake) or 1 February (for summer intake)
After the above deadlines have passed, please submit your certificates as well as proof of your proficiency in the German language to us together with your application for admission (if you want to study a restricted admission programme) or your application for enrolment (if you want to study a programme with unrestricted admission). We will then check whether you qualify for admission when we process your application.
Information for holders of an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma:
To find out what criteria have to be met for an IB Diploma to be recognised as a general higher education entrance qualification, read the information sheet Vereinbarung über die Anerkennung des International Baccalaureate Diploma...., which is available for download from the website of the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle for the Free State of Bavaria (section Merkblätter). The information sheet is available in German only.
Proof of proficiency in the German language
To be able to enrol in a programme at the University of Würzburg, holders of a higher education entrance qualification that was awarded by a non-German institution must also present an official language certificate (see list below) showing evidence of their proficiency in German. As a rule, this certificate is also required from German nationals.
Applicants whose biographies suggest that they have an adequate proficiency in German (e. g. applicants who graduated from a secondary school in Germany before they moved abroad) may be waived from the language certificate requirement on a case-by-case basis.
We will accept the following language certificates:
- Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) exam, DSH2 or higher
- TestDaF language certificate with level TDN 4 in all four components (= DSH2)
- Feststellungsprüfung exam (subject German) administered by a German Studienkolleg school
- Language certificate Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz, level 2
- Language certificate Goethe-Zertifikat C2
- Deutsche Sprachprüfung II exam administered by Sprachen- und Dolmetscher-Institut Munich
- telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule exam
If you do not hold any of these certificates, you can sit the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) exam at the University of Würzburg before you enrol. The exam is offered twice a year (in early April and early October).
If you want to sign up for the DSH exam, please contact Ms Kömm (phone: +49 931-3182461, email: studienberechtigung@uni-wuerzburg.de) by 1 August (winter intake) or 1 February (summer intake).
Applying for admission to Studienkolleg and the Feststellungsprüfung exam
If your certificate does not qualify you for direct admission to the University of Würzburg, you have the option to attend the Studienkolleg school in Munich and take the Feststellungsprüfung exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, you will be awarded a subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification that qualifies you for admission to degree programmes in subjects that are related to the course you attended at Studienkolleg and will be considered to have demonstrated an adequate proficiency in German.
Please note that you cannot apply directly at Studienkolleg but must apply via the International Office of the University of Würzburg.
