Public Transport Pass (Semesterticket)

The public transport pass (Semesterticket) was introduced in the winter semester 1999/2000 on the initiative of JMU student representatives. The pass is offered by Studierendenwerk Würzburg and the local public transport providers represented by Verkehrsunternehmens-Verbund Mainfranken GmbH (VVM).

The public transport pass is €90.90.

The University of Würzburg is required to collect the fee for the public transport pass from all students who are enrolled in a degree programme and then forward the fee payments to VVM via Studierendenwerk Würzburg.

On principle, all students - including those who are on leave of absence - are required to pay the fee for the pass when they enrol or re-enrol to continue their studies in the upcoming semester.

Who is eligible for exemption?

Only those students who have a severe disability and are entitled to use public transport free of charge are exempt from the fee. They will need to demonstrate their eligibility for exemption by showing the supplement to their severely handicapped pass with the according token.

If you are eligible for exemption, please let us have a photocopy of your severely handicapped pass and token. Please submit that document to us together with your application for enrolment or, respectively, in sufficient time prior to the beginning of the re-enrolment period. If you fail to do so, we will not be able to grant you an exemption from the fee

In addition, students who are enrolled at two or more higher education institutions located in the area of validity of the public transport pass offered by Studierendenwerk Würzburg and Verkehrsunternehmens-Verbund Mainfranken GmbH (VVM) are eligible for exemption from the fee for the public transport pass. This only applies to students who are enrolled at the University of Würzburg and the University of Music Würzburg (HfM) or the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) - Campus Würzburg at the same time.

If this applies to you, please let us have an enrolment certificate issued by the higher education institution at which you have already paid the fee. Please submit that document to us together with your application for enrolment or, respectively, in sufficient time prior to the beginning of the re-enrolment period.

I was disenrolled. Can I get a refund for the fee?

You will find information and a refund application form on our refund page.

Students who are enrolled in a programme at the University of Würzburg have the option to buy the ‘VRN-Anschluss-Semester-Ticket’ public transport pass offered by Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN), the public transport provider for the Rhine-Neckar region. For more information, please refer to www.vrn.de (pages available in German only).

Students whose principal residence is in the Main-Tauber district can purchase the ‘VRN-Anschluss-Semester-Ticket’ for 50% off the regular price. For more information, click VRN-Anschluss-Semester-Ticket (information sheet available in German only).

From 1 March 2023, the state of Baden-Württemberg, together with the transport associations and public transport authorities, will offer the JugendticketBW, which is valid throughout the state. The annual ticket for the equivalent of one euro per day is an offer for young people to use public transport in Baden-Württemberg at a reasonable price. With the corresponding VRN Jugendticket BW, public transport can also be used in the entire area of the Rhine-Neckar Transport Association (VRN).

The VRN JugendticketBW is an annual ticket, costs 365 euros and is valid around the clock on all buses and trains of the public transport system for 2nd class in Baden-Württemberg and in the entire VRN network area (in the Western Palatinate on school days from 2 pm).

Young people receive the VRN Jugendticket BW if they are under 21 years of age and live in Baden-Württemberg, as well as pupils, trainees and students under 27 years of age whose place of school or university is in the Baden-Württemberg part of the VRN (on presentation of proof of training).

Note for students of the Würzburg universities with their main place of residence in the Main-Tauber district:

The Main-Tauber-Kreis District Office recommends that students of Würzburg universities under 21 with their main residence in the Main-Tauber-Kreis who wish to apply for the Main-Tauber-Kreis subsidy purchase the VRN JugendticketBW, as only the VRN JugendticketBW can be recognised for journeys to Würzburg Hauptbahnhof and back. Unfortunately, JugendticketBW from other transport associations are not recognised outside of Baden-Württemberg.

Students aged 21 and over must - as before - use the VRN Anschluss-Semester-Ticket.
