How to Apply for Admission to Master's Programmes
Am I eligible for admission?
To be eligible for admission to a Master's programme, you must hold a Bachelor's or equivalent degree (e. g. Diplom or state examination). In addition, you must demonstrate proficiency in the relevant field, i. e. must demonstrate that you have acquired certain knowledge and skills in areas relevant to the respective Master's programme. In some cases, you must also go through an aptitude assessment procedure (i. e. must sit a test or similar) or the final grade of your Bachelor’s degree must be above a certain threshold. You will be informed about the specific entry requirements for the Master's programme of your choice during the application procedure. Information on specific entry requirements is also available in the FSB (subject-specific provisions) for the programme in question.
To allow students to directly move on to a Master's programme after graduating from a Bachelor's programme, students may apply for admission to a Master's programme pending completion of their Bachelor's degree provided that they have acquired the required knowledge and skills and/or have achieved a certain number of ECTS credits at the time of application (please note that this option is only available for programmes with unrestricted admission).
Due to the large number of applications, admission to some Master's programmes is restricted (see table below). If admission restrictions are in place, all applicants that meet the requirements for eligibility for admission to the respective programme will have to go through an admission procedure.
In addition, some Master's programmes require qualified work experience of usually no less than one year.
Application
You will have to submit your application for admission to a Master's programme in due form and time either via the University's web portal or via the respective Faculty. Please be sure to submit your application no later than 15 January for summer intake or 15 July for admission-free master's programs and until August 20 for admission-restricted master's programs (life sciences, information systems, international economic policy, management, media communication, psychology) for winter intake. Please note that the application deadline may vary for some English-language master's programs where the application is made via the faculty!
Applications for admission to most of the Master's programmes offered by the University of Würzburg must be submitted via the Master's portal of the University. You may apply for admission to several Master's programmes. Please submit a separate application for each programme.

How will I know whether my application was accepted?
You will receive an email informing you of whether your application for admission to a Master's programme was accepted or rejected.
To access your letter of admission or rejection, please log in to the Master's portal of the University of Würzburg.
If you have received an offer of admission and have not yet completed your Bachelor's degree, you will initially be enrolled in the Master's programme on a conditional basis. Please see your letter of admission for the deadline by which you must submit your Bachelor's certificate.
Aptitude assessment
The aptitude of applicants will be assessed by the competent aptitude assessment panel at the respective Faculty. This panel will review the documents the applicants submitted per email (after having applied online via the University's web portal) and will make a decision as to whether they meet the requirements for eligibility for admission to the Master's programme of their choice. In addition, applicants might also be required to sit aptitude tests and/or attend selection interviews.
Information on specific entry requirements is available in the FSB (subject-specific provisions) for the programme of your choice.
Admission procedure
The admission procedure for restricted admission Master's programmes is divided into two stages. In stage one, the competent body will assess whether applicants meet the general requirements for eligibility for admission. The actual selection process will then take place in stage two.
Currently, places on all restricted admission Master's programmes are allocated on the basis of the overall grade awarded for an applicant's Bachelor's degree. If necessary due to the number of applications, a certain percentage of places will be reserved in advance for applicants claiming hardship (2 percent), for foreign nationals (5 percent), and for top athletes (2 percent).
Therefore, only those applicants who have completed their Bachelor's degrees by 15 September (for winter intake) or 15 March (for summer intake) will be able to participate in the admission procedure. It will not be possible to admit applicants to restricted admission Master's programmes on a conditional basis.
Admission thresholds for Master's programmes
Credit transfer
If you already have ECTS credits, you may apply for credit transfer. The decision on whether your previous study is eligible for credit transfer will be made by the competent aptitude assessment panel or examination committee. If your credits are recognised, it might be possible to admit you to a higher subject semester. For more information on credit transfer and the respective form, please refer to the Examination Office. If you are unsure whether certain qualifications/examination achievements are considered equivalent, please consult with the competent degree programme coordinator or course advisor.
Master's programmes FAQs
How do I apply for admission? And what are the deadlines?
You will have to submit your application for admission to a Master's programme, in due form and time, via the Master’s portal of the University. Please make sure you submit your application by 15 January (for summer intake) or by 15 July (for winter intake).
I am a non-German national. Where do I send my application?
Please submit your application to the International Office of the University of Würzburg. Application deadlines for non-German nationals do not differ from the application deadlines for German nationals (15 July for winter intake, 15 January for summer intake).
Do you offer both summer and winter intake?
On principle, we do. However, some Master's programmes offer winter intake only. To find out whether the programme of your choice offers both winter and summer intake or winter intake only, click here.
Can I apply for admission to a Master's programme pending completion of my undergraduate degree?
Yes, you can, but please bear in mind that you must demonstrate that you have achieved either 120 or 150 ECTS credits (depending on the programme for which you want to apply) at the time you submit your application. In addition, admission to many subjects requires that you have achieved ECTS credits in relevant modules. For more information on admission criteria, please refer to the FSB (subject-specific provisions, available in German only) for the Master's programme of your choice.
I was admitted to a Master's programme on a conditional basis. By when will I have to complete my Bachelor's degree?
You must have successfully completed your Bachelor's degree by the end of the re‑enrolment period of your first or, respectively, your second semester. For the exact deadline by which you must have submitted your Bachelor's certificate, please refer to the FSB (subject-specific provisions, available in German only) for the Master's programme in question.
Can I take a leave of absence in my first semester as a Master's student?
Yes, you can. If you want to do so, please submit your application for a leave of absence to Student Affairs. For more information on the circumstances under which a leave of absence will be approved, click here.
I already have ECTS credits. Can I apply for credit transfer, and will it be possible to admit me to a higher subject semester?
Your previous study is eligible for credit transfer within the first subject semester, provided that the qualifications/examination achievements in question are considered equivalent. The final decision on credit transfer lies with the competent aptitude assessment/admissions panel or examination committee. For more information on credit transfer and the form you will have to complete, please refer to the pages of the Examination Office (available in German only). If you are unsure whether certain qualifications/examination achievements are considered equivalent, please consult with the competent degree programme coordinator or course advisor.
I want to read the regulations and provisions governing the Master's programme of my choice. Where do I find them?
For all regulations and provisions governing the Master's programme of your choice, please refer to ASPO (general academic and examination regulations for Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes) and the FSB (subject-specific provisions) for the Master's programme in question. Please be aware that those documents are available in German only. We would recommend that you read those documents before you submit your application for admission. They contain information on prerequisites for admission as well as other important information on your Master's programme.
