Admission to the first subject semester of a programme at the University of Würzburg

To find out what programmes we offer, go to https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/studium/angebot/.

All restricted admission programmes (https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studying-at-jmu/studienangelegenheiten/application-and-enrollment/bewerbungundzulassunguebersich/) require an application for admission.

You will not have to apply for admission to degree programmes with unrestricted admission; just enrol within the designated enrolment deadlines (https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studium/studienangelegenheiten/bewerbung-und-einschreibung/daten-online/immatrikulation/unrestricted-admission/)

Applications for summer intake will open around early December and will close on 15 January. If you are required to submit any documents in paper form by postal mail, the University of Würzburg must also receive those documents by that closing date (this is a preclusive period). Letters of admission or rejection will be made available to applicants starting around early March.

Applications for winter intake will open around late May/early June and will close on 15 July. If you are required to submit any documents in paper form by postal mail, the University of Würzburg must also receive those documents by that closing date (this is a preclusive period). Letters of admission or rejection will be made available to applicants in electronic form starting around early August.

The application deadlines can also be found at https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studying-at-jmu/studienangelegenheiten/dates-and-deadlines/application-deadlines/

You will have to submit your application for admission online through the WueStudy portal. If you are filing a claim for special circumstances, you will also have to send us some documents in paper form. Towards the end of the online application process, you will see a list of all the documents you will need to submit by postal mail. Please be aware that the University of Würzburg must receive those documents by the closing date for applications (this is a preclusive period).

Please send your documents to the following address:

Admission to the first subject semester of programmes in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry is subject to national admission restrictions. This means that you will have to apply through www.hochschulstart.de.

To learn more about the application process, go to the hochschulstart.de website (available in German only) or read the information provided at https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studying-at-jmu/studienangelegenheiten/application-and-enrollment/bewerbungundzulassunguebersich/beginners-nationwide-admission-restricted-courses-of-study/.

If you are NOT a German national and are NOT holding a German higher education entrance qualification, you will have to submit your application through our International Office (https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/international/studying-in-wuerzburg/degree-programmes/application/medicine-dentistry-pharmacy/).

Go to https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studying-at-jmu/studienangelegenheiten/studienberechtigung/ to find out whether you are eligible for admission to a programme at the University of Würzburg.

You will have to submit a preliminary review documentation (Vorprüfungsdokumentation, VPD) from uni-assist along with your application for admission.

For more information, visit https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studying-at-jmu/studienangelegenheiten/studienberechtigung/preliminary-review-documentation/.

In addition, you will need to provide proof of your proficiency in the German language to be able to enrol. More information can be found at https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studying-at-jmu/studienangelegenheiten/studienberechtigung/german-nationals-holding-higher-education-entrance-qualifications-awarded-by-non-german-institutions/ under ‘Proof of proficiency in the German language’.

If, at the time you apply, you have successfully completed another degree programme at a German university or university of applied sciences already, you are an applicant applying for admission to second degree studies. Information for applicants applying for admission to second degree studies can be found on our information page about admission to programmes with local admission restrictions under ‘4. Applicants applying for admission to second degree studies’.

If you want to study for two degrees at the same time, you will go through the regular application procedure but will need approval from the course advisor for the restricted admission programme to enrol. Please be aware that at the University of Würzburg, you cannot study human medicine and dentistry at the same time.

You can submit up to 12 applications for programmes that are taking part in the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV; this includes the programmes with national admission restrictions, which require application through hochschulstart.de).

In addition, you may submit several applications for admission to the first subject semester of programmes with local admission restrictions that are not taking part in the DoSV.

Be aware, however, that you may only submit one application per programme for admission to a higher subject semester. This means that you may only apply for one particular higher subject semester of a programme, but you may also apply for admission to the first subject semester of that same programme at the same time.

Places on some degree programmes are allocated to applicants via hochschulstart.de in what is called the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV).

What does this mean for you? It means that you will first have to register to the hochschulstart.de portal. hochschulstart.de will then assign you an applicant authentication number (Bewerber-Authentifizierungsnummer, BAN). Please make sure that you do not lose that number. You will need it later on in the application process. After you have registered with hochschulstart.de, submit your application to us through our WueStudy portal. Please be aware that our application form will ask you for your BAN number.

If you are applying to several universities in Germany, your BAN number will allow hochschulstart.de to coordinate your applications.

The DoSV procedure is called ‘dialogue-oriented’ because you, the applicant, will be required to play an active part in the admission procedure - even after you have submitted your application for admission. For example, you may re-prioritise your applications or may accept an offer of admission. The procedure helps ensure that places on degree programmes that remain untaken can be offered directly to other applicants.

The selection criteria for admission to programmes that are taking part in the DoSV are the same as those used for admission to the other programmes with local admission restrictions.

More information in German about the coordination rules can be found on the hochschulstart.de website.

The following types of service will be considered:

  • Up to three years of military service or service in the German Border Guard
  • German Federal Volunteer Service under the Federal Volunteer Service act (Bundesfreiwilligendienstgesetz, BFDG)
  • Alternative civilian service (Zivildienst)
  • Freiwilliges soziales/ökologisches Jahr (year of voluntary work in the social or environmental sector)
  • Weltwärts volunteer service
  • Kulturwelt volunteer service

  • At least two years of working as a development worker
  • Up to three years of providing care for a child or other family member, provided that care was provided full time and the caregiving was comparable to the other types of service listed above in terms of the extent and intensity of involvement

The Berufsvorbereitendes Soziales Jahr (BSJ) orientation year cannot be considered.

The admission thresholds in previous rounds of admissions (https://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/studying-at-jmu/studienangelegenheiten/forms-downloads/auswahlgrenzen/) can give you an idea of your chances of being admitted.
