Prof. Dr. Gonzalo Aguilar

Gonzalo Aguilar is Professor of Brazilian Literature at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and a researcher at the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET). He directs the master’s program in Literaturas de América Latina at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM) and has been a visiting professor at Stanford University, Harvard University, and the Universidade de São Paulo. He has received several fellowships, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005 and a DAAD grant from the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut in Berlin in 2014.

During his fellowship at CEMES, Aguilar investigates the development of messianism in contemporary Argentina and Brazil with a special focus on Bolsonaro and Milei as far-right political leaders. Using Foucault’s genealogical method and Oswald de Andrade’s anthropophagic theory, he will analyze the continuities and discontinuities of messianic discourse linked to Pentecostal churches and Hasidic Judaism, exploring the political, cultural, and artistic dimensions of messianism. His project directly aligns with the core mission of CEMES by shedding new light on how contemporary developments in messianism intersect with challenges to democratic institutions.
