CEMES is participating in the action week of "Würzburg gegen Antisemitismus"
As part of Würzburg gegen Antisemitismus (Würzburg Against Antisemitism), an action week dedicated to combating antisemitism, the Käte Hamburger Kolleg for Studies in Messianism (CEMES) is taking part in the program with two lectures.
Prof. Dr. Barbara Schmitz will explore continuities and discontinuities in anti-Jewish patterns of thought. Dr. Nadine Negri will then present CEMES in a talk titled “The Messiah Between Napoleon and Trump.”
Taking place from October 25 to 31, 2026, Würzburg gegen Antisemitismus is organized by Würzburg’s three universities in collaboration with cultural and civil society institutions. The initiative is part of nationwide educational and action weeks against antisemitism. Through lectures, workshops, and other events, it promotes engagement with Jewish life and critical reflection on antisemitism.
All events will be held in German.

Invitation to the Opening Ceremony
Since commencing its work in April 2026, the Käte Hamburger Center for Studies in Messianism (CEMES) at Julius-Maximilians-Universität of Würzburg has reached an important milestone: in November 2026, the Center will welcome its first cohort of Fellows. We are pleased to mark this occasion by inviting you to the opening ceremony, which will take place on November 23, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. in the Audimax of the Neue Universität (Sanderring 2, 97070 Würzburg).
Professor Homi K. Bhabha (Harvard University) has kindly accepted our invitation to deliver the keynote lecture, entitled "The Messianic Moment".
The opening ceremony marks an important moment in the development of the Center and the beginning of a new chapter in its work. We look forward to welcoming colleagues, partners, friends and all those interested in the Center and its activities.
We warmly invite you to join us for this special occasion.
