German Language Skills and Courses
In the following table you can see which level is required to apply for your field of study.

Please note:
- Please enclose a certificate of your German language skills with your application (the certificate should not be older than one year);
- Participation certificates will not be accepted as confirmation of language proficiency
To enrol in study programmes taught in German, usually you are required to prove a DSH2-level.
Exceptions:
- Bachelor: For these Bachelor's programmes a B2-level is sufficient for enrolment:

- For some Master’s programmes you do not need a DSH examination (see list).The German requirements for our study programmes in English (application and enrolment) can be found on the list of international degree programmes.
The type of admission depends on the level of German you were able to demonstrate in your application:
- If you can demonstrate sufficient German language proficiency, you will be admitted to the degree program if you are able to obtain a place at the university. With this admission, you can enroll directly in the degree programme without providing any additional German language certificates.
- If you can prove that you have the German language proficiency required for application, but not yet the level required for enrollment, you will be admitted to the degree programme on the condition that you submit the required German language proficiency by the time of enrollment, provided you are able to obtain a place at the university.
IMPORTANT: You can only be enrolled in the degree programme once you have demonstrated the language proficiency required for enrollment.
- The Language Center of the University of Würzburg does not provide preparatory German language courses.
- Private language schools in Würzburg can be found on the website of the City of Würzburg.

- TestDaF with a minimum score of 4 x 4 TDN (=DSH 2); also offered at the Language Center of the University of Würzburg
- The assessment test of a German preparatory college (Studienkolleg)
- telc Certificate C1 Hochschule
- German Abitur and equivalent qualifications in Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland (with German as a language) Secondary level I
- Vocational training in Germany
- Multilingual International Baccalaureate (IB) with German as Language A as an examination subject
- Proof of German language skills that has been recognized as sufficient for admission to higher education through bilateral agreements or other agreements made by the KMK and HRK. The following foreign certificates are recognized as proof of the German language skills required for admission to higher education in the Federal Republic of Germany:
- Proof of German language proficiency in the French Diplôme du Baccalauréat, which was acquired after attending a bilingual German-French branch of a secondary school
- The French Diplôme du Baccalauréat with Option internationale of the German departments and the Baccalauréat français international section allemande
- The European Baccalaureate at the European Schools, provided that an examination in German as a first language (L1) or second language (L2) has been successfully completed
- US Advanced Placement Examination (AP Examination) in German
- Upper secondary school leaving certificate from the German-speaking community of the Kingdom of Belgium
- Secondary school leaving certificates from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
- School leaving certificates from schools with German as the language of instruction in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol (Italy)
- The leaving certificate from the international German language department at the Liceo Gimnasiale “Luigi Galvani” in Bologna
- The leaving certificate from the international German language department at the Liceo Gimnasio Statale “M.Gioia” in Piacenza, Italy
- The leaving certificate from the international German language department at the “Educandato Statale Collegio Uccelis” in Udine, Italy
- The leaving certificate of a German-Irish bilingual secondary school (bilingual Leaving Certificate) at the German School Dublin, St. Kilian's, Ireland
- The leaving certificate of the bilingual departments at the Liceo Ginnasio Statale “Romagnosi” in Parma and the Liceo Classico Statale Socrate in Bari, Italy
- The final certificate from the International Department of German Language at the Liceo Classico “Guiseppe Garibaldi” in Naples, Italy
- The final certificate from the international German language department at the Liceo Classico Statale “Umberto I” in Palermo, Italy
- The final certificate from the International Department of German Language at the Liceo Scienze Umane / Artistico “Giovanni Pascoli,” Bolzano/Bozen, Italy
- The Polish Matura examination in German at general education lyceums with a bilingual branch of education with German as the second language of instruction.
- The leaving certificate from foreign schools with German language instruction that lead to the Mixed Language International Baccalaureate
- The “German Language Examination II” of the Language and Interpreting Institute in Munich
