Studying for Two Degrees (Doppelstudium)

The University of Würzburg will allow you to study for two degrees at the same time if certain conditions are satisfied. Please note that you will need to obtain prior written approval from the University.

Approval will only be granted if you provide sufficiently convincing evidence of your ability to duly complete both programmes and demonstrate that you are fully aware of the implications of studying for two degrees at the same time. It will not be granted if the courses of the two programmes clash or it can be expected that the proposed arrangement will prolong your time to degree completion. Please be aware that you are fully responsible for any disadvantages that may result from you studying for two degrees at the same time. Therefore, please review all available information carefully before you make a decision to apply for permission. For information and advice, please contact the competent course advisory service.

If admission restrictions are in place for one or both of the degree programmes, you must also demonstrate that strong professional, academic, or artistic grounds exist for which you are seeking to study for the two degrees at the same time.

Whether you will be given permission to study in the two programmes at the same time will depend on the opinion of the course advisor(s) of the restricted admission degree programme(s) in question. The course advisor will give his/her opinion as to whether you are suitable, whether the time commitment is manageable, and whether it makes sense to study in the two programmes of your choice at the same time.

If admission to the programme you want to add is restricted, you must apply for a place and be granted admission. Please note the application deadlines.

If you want to add a programme/subject admission to which requires successful completion of an aptitude test, you must pass said test.

You cannot be enrolled in degree programmes in human medicine and dentistry at the same time. In Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes governed by ASPO (General Academic and Examination Regulations) 2015, it is not allowed to study for two degrees in the same major with identical ECTS credits at the same time.

Studying at the University of Würzburg and another university at the same time:

You may be granted permission to study at two German universities at the same time if you provide sufficiently convincing evidence of your ability to duly complete both programmes. Normally, you cannot be enrolled in the same degree programme at two different German universities at the same time.

Please note that you will only be able to enrol in the programme at the University of Würzburg if your other university has also granted you permission to study for two degrees at the same time.

The most frequently asked questions about double degree programmes:

The application can be submitted conveniently online via Wuestudy.
You can find the application in the menu under ‘My studies’ - ‘Requests’.

There you can also upload any documents required for your application (e.g. letter of admission, letter of credit transfer, etc.).

The application for approval of a double degree programme must be submitted together with the enrolment or re-registration for the semester in question. However, it must be submitted to the University of Würzburg no later than one month after the start of lectures for the semester in question. The exact dates of the start of lectures for the individual semesters can be found on our website under deadlines and dates.

For students who have been admitted to a degree programme with admission restrictions and/or an aptitude test in the semester in question, other individual application deadlines apply. These will be communicated in the letter of admission.

Unfortunately, a double degree programme is no longer possible after the respective deadline.

WueStudy will inform you of the approval of your double degree programme by email to your student email address.

You can also see the status of your application in WueStudy under ‘My studies’ - ‘Requests’. If there are any ambiguities in your application or if documents still need to be submitted, we will let you know via a comment on your application in WueStudy.

You will also receive the authorisation for a double degree programme at several universities in writing from us by post.

The semester fee only has to be paid once per student for a double degree programme at the University of Würzburg.

In the case of a double degree programme at the University of Würzburg and another university, the semester fee must be paid at both universities. Exceptions to this are only possible if you are enrolled at two universities in Würzburg or Bavaria at the same time. You can find more information on this on our semester fee website.

If you are underage at the time you submit your application for permission to take a leave of absence, please make sure your parents/legal guardians also sign the document. More information for underage university students and their parents can be found here.
