Dr. Kateryna Yeremieieva

Kateryna Yeremieieva defended her dissertation on the political humor of Soviet Ukraine at Karazin National University, Kharkiv, Ukraine. From 2016 to 2023, she was Associate Professor at the Department of History and Philology, Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport. In 2022–2023, she held a fellowship at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany. Since December 1, 2023, she has been a researcher at the CRC “Cultures of Vigilance” at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich within the Walter Benjamin Program of the German Research Foundation. She is currently working on a monograph titled Humour Turbulence: From Soviet Satire to Wartime Memes in Ukraine, which examines inappropriate humor in Ukraine during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Yeremieieva’s research at CEMES focuses on how Taras Shevchenko functions as a continuously re-emerging prophetic and vernacular messianic figure in Ukrainian public culture from the late Soviet period to the present. The project investigates how prophetic interpretations of his figure and writings are actively reproduced, transformed, and emotionally reactivated across commemorative practices, institutional discourse, and contemporary digital communication. Particular attention is devoted to personal social media posts published during the annual “Shevchenko Days” commemorations. By incorporating digital ethnography and discourse analysis, her project directly advances the mission of CEMES by demonstrating how modern digital societies reshape historic prophetic authority to navigate contemporary periods of war and crisis.
