Coimbra Group - Scholarship Programme
The Coimbra Group Scholarship Programmes enable young international researchers from selected regions to undertake a research stay of one to three months at a Coimbra Group member university. The aim is to promote individual research, support academic career development, and foster international networking.
JMU participates in the Scholarship Programme through two funding lines. These provide young international researchers with the opportunity to spend a research stay at JMU

Programme goals
The Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme enable young researchers form sub-Saharan Africa a research stay for one to three month at a Coimbra Group member university. The aim is the further development of ongoing research projects, the establishment of sustainable scientifc cooperation as well as the promotion of the academic career of the participants.
Target group and prerequisites
• Young researchers under the age of 45
• Nationality and residence in Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania
• Employee of a university or an equivalent higher education institution in sub-Saharan Africa
• Researcher at doctoral or postdoctoral level

Programme goals
Since 1999 the Coimbra Group offers Scholarship Programmes for Young Researchers from European Neighbouring Countries for a research stay for one to three month at a Coimbra group member university. The goal is the implemenation of a part of the reserach work, the development of new academic cooperation as well as the development of the academic career.
Target group and prerequisites
• Young researchers born on or after the 1st January 1990
• Nationality and residence in Ukraine
• Employee of a university or an equivalent higher education institution in that country
• Researcher at doctoral or postdoctoral level

This information applies to the Scholarship Programmes in both funding lines. Only one scholarship is awarded per funding line each year.
- Duration: 1–3 at the JMU
- Scholarship: 1,200 EUR/month to cover living expenses
- Accommodation provided
- Access to University resources (library, cafeteria etc.)
- Connection to the Welcome Centre and access to the email distribution list for visiting scholars
- Fulfilment of the funding criteria (see eligibility criteria)
- Committed supervision by a scientist of the JMU (prior contact required)
- Letter of Acceptance of the supervisor must be attached to the application
1. Selection of JMU as target univeristy (only one application possible)
2. Contact to a supervisor at the JMU
- Submission of CV and reserach project
- Obtaining a Letter of Acceptance of the supervisor
3. Online application via the application portal of the Coimbra Group
4. Notification of the Coimbra Group about the selection status
5. Scheduling of the stay in consultation with the JMU in the case of approval
- The scheduling of the research stay is carried out in close coordination with the supervisor at the JMU.
- Applicants are responsible for the organisation of the exemption from the home university, the timely application for a visa and obtaining suitable health insurance. The Welcome Centre of the JMU provides advice.
- If a scholarship is awarded, the funding conditinons of JMU apply.
Information
The call for applications for the Scholarship Programme for Young African Researchers and the Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood is issued annually. Please check regularly for updates on application deadlines and possible changes to the terms and conditions.
The application deadline for the academic year 2025/2026 has already passed. The application period usually runs from January to April.
