As part of the University of Würzburg's alumni network, we-Yo Kikuchi and Marie-Christin Flöhl-have teamed up for a German-Japanese language tandem. Since then, we've been meeting regularly every Wednesday online at 7:00 a.m. German time (3:00 p.m. Japanese time), a time that has proven ideal for both of us due to the time difference.

Our language exchange has been a great enrichment for both of us. From my (Marie-Christin Flöhl) perspective, the experience has been thoroughly positive: switching between German, Japanese, and some English not only wakes me up but also gives me a motivating start to the day. What I find particularly valuable is the opportunity to get to know another culture directly through someone who is deeply rooted in it. I really appreciate how patiently and helpfully Yo supports me in my learning.

Yo Kikuchi emphasises that making friends with people from other countries brings him great joy. This exchange opens up new perspectives and knowledge. In his view, direct dialogue with native speakers is particularly effective for improving conversational skills in a foreign language. For those just starting out, it is important to ensure it does not become a burden on their daily lives. Even though progress takes time, continuous improvement occurs - and not least, he also sees language learning as a kind of "anti-aging" for his brain.

We get along very well and find our conversations enriching and inspiring. Our language exchange partnership demonstrates just how vibrant and impactful intercultural exchange can be. We highly recommend that anyone interested try a language exchange partnership themselves.
