Digital Discussion Forum 2021
‘Russia and Germany: Discourse on Identities – Variations and Transformations’ 23–25 September 2021
DAAD Alumni Project in collaboration with the German-Russian Forum
The digital discussion forum, ‘Russia and Germany: Discourse on Identities – Variations and Transformations’, which took place from 23 to 25 September 2021, was organised as a DAAD alumni project in cooperation with the German-Russian Forum. As a tandem project, it brought to light many different approaches to the topic of identity, as well as a multitude of synergies. Over the three days of the event, keynote presentations alternated with group discussions. There was also scope for an international perspective on current societal challenges in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, as exemplified by the presentation by Dr Daniela Seybold from the Academic Human Resources Department at JMU. The topics were as diverse as the participants; for example, there were also presentations on the themes of identity and diversity in museum work (Prof. Dombrowski and Prof. Griesbach).
Germany regards Russia as an important partner and defines the cooperation in education, research and technology – which dates back to an agreement concluded in 1986 – as a key pillar of German-Russian relations. According to figures from the Federal Foreign Office, there are currently around 900 cooperation projects between German and Russian higher education institutions. On average, more than 13,000 Russian citizens study in Germany each year, whilst up to 2,000 German DAAD scholarship holders gain experience at universities and research institutions in Russia. Current societal challenges, crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic (with the closure of national borders), and recent political changes (cyber-attacks, nuclear agreements) but also historical turning points such as the reunification of Germany or the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 have set in motion – and continue to set in motion – processes of transformation that pose a challenge to the development of the identity and value systems of citizens and individuals within national borders.
The forum participants, who have gained new individual perspectives as a result of current developments and their time in Germany, are valuable discussion partners on this topic, which is so important for mutual understanding.
Programme: ONLINE Discussion Forum
