Slammer 2018

Dr Eva Lange, Egyptology, University of Würzburg

What do you like about the Science Slam format?

It offers an opportunity to develop a fresh new perspective on one’s own scientific research and to communicate it to a wide audience, in other words, to share it with them

What will you be talking about?

My excavations in the Egyptian Nile Delta.

What has been the best experience so far during your time at university?
Nota single experience, but rather an ongoing one: being part of the scientific process of work and discovery.

Prof. Wolfgang Weiß, History of the Church in Franconia, University of Würzburg

What do you like about the Science Slam format?
Brevity is the soul of wit. So I won’t say a single unnecessary word on this question.

What will you be talking about?
1,350 years of Franconian church history in one-minute chunks!

What has been your best experience so far during your time at university?
My best experience was the trial lecture as part of my habilitation process in 1998, when, to my surprise, the lecture theatre was packed to the rafters because so many friends and acquaintances had come. That really made me happy at the time. There weren’t enough snacks, but there was plenty of wine.

Dr Stefan Zimmermann, Business Administration, University of Würzburg

What do you like about the Science Slam format?
As a member of the audience, I always loved hearing about a wide variety of topics in an entertaining way. How will I like the format from the other perspective? I’m curious myself ...

What will you be talking about?
A true universal genius of the 20th century and what we can learn from him about management.

What has been the best experience so far during your ‘time at uni’?
Looking back, I naturally think of the great freedom to engage with so many fascinating things. And we laughed a lot – sometimes with the students, sometimes at them.
Looking ahead, I think that, given the current organisational, leadership and incentive structures at the university, we’re going to need a great deal of humour in the future...

Prof. Dr Mario Fischer, E-commerce, FHWS

What do you like about the Science Slam format?
The focus on the essentials due to the strict time limit. It’s a huge challenge to condense content into seven minutes in a way that really grabs people’s attention.

What will you be talking about?
“Dear visitor, welcome to our website! Here we do everything we can to drive you away again.” Alarming and instructive insights into the lack of customer focus on the web.

What has been your best experience so far during your time at university?
For me, that feels like ages ago. But I liked lectures that were delivered with humour. Unfortunately, there was only one lecturer who really had the knack of it. I loved his lectures. And it was from him that I retained the material best

Claus Bolza-Schünemann, CEO of Koenig & Bauer AG

What do you like about the Science Slam format?

The fact that I have no idea what’s in store for me!

What will you be talking about?

The details of a piece of cotton

What has been your best experience so far during your studies?

Passing my main maths exam at the third attempt

Dmitri Nedrenco, Institute of Mathematics, University of Würzburg

What do you like about the Science Slam format?
As a slammer, I can reach so many people directly and immediately with my research in a way that I rarely manage to do as a scientist.

What will you be talking about?
Mathematical paper folding in university education.

What has been your best experience so far during your time at university?
My best experiences, even back when I was a student assistant, were in teaching. It is quite fascinating when, as a lecturer, you suddenly see a light come on in the students’ eyes as a sign that the missing piece of the puzzle has just fallen into place
