Science Slam 2016

At this year’s Science Slam, seven slammers gave entertaining seven-minute presentations on their fields of work. Last year’s winner, Professor Klaus Brehm from the Institute of Hygiene and Microbiology, got things off to a flying start with a talk entitled “A topic that has been ‘nagging’ him for years”.

Our slammers were:

Dr Manuela Scheuermann (political scientist at JMU) on the topic "Just saving the world for a moment"

Julien Bobineau (Romance linguist at JMU), who had won the 2014 Science Slam and was competing again with the title “Africa is not a country. How colonial stereotypes shape our everyday lives.”

Prof. Eric Hilgendorf (law scholar at JMU), whose slam was titled “The Fundamentals of Criminal Law – Why the Rule of Law is so important”

Prof. Volker Herrmann (engineering scientist at the FHWS), whose slam addressed the question “Can condoms be reused?”

Prof. Steffen Hillebrecht (business economist at the FHWS) performed a slam on the topic “Burnout – origins, effects and consequences from a human resources perspective.”

Prof. Robert Luxenhofer (chemist at JMU), whose topic was “Like oil and water. Solving the insoluble.”

as well as the winner of the evening, Charlotte Wermser (infectious disease biologist at the University Hospital), who won over the audience with her piece entitled “Bacteria looking for a flat share” and received the loudest applause of the evening.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our winner once again and thank all the slammers and participants for a wonderful, fun evening! We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our host Johannes Keppner, who guided us through the evening in no less an entertaining manner!

All proceeds went to the Deutschlandstipendium.
