"From refuge in German embassies to German unity" - Report by a contemporary witness

After joining the diplomatic service at the beginning of the 1980s, alumnus Dr Axel Hartmann was responsible at the embassy in Budapest for assisting GDR refugees and those wishing to leave the country and was targeted by the Stasi. During his time in the Federal Chancellery in Bonn, he analysed Gorbachev's policy and the changes in Eastern Europe as a consultant for Eastern Europe. He experienced the unification process as personal advisor to the head of the Federal Chancellery, Federal Minister Seiters. Most recently, he was German Ambassador to the Slovak Republic (Bratislava). Hartmann's Stasi file was made into a film under the title: "Budapest - the Gap in the Iron Curtain".
