Carpenter ants perform amputations as a preventive measure. Their motto is: Better safe than sorry when it comes to potential infections.

Carpenter ants amputate the injured legs of fellow ants to minimise the risk of infection. A new study involving a Würzburg researcher shows that this task is primarily carried out by ants switching from indoor to outdoor duties.

The “Würzburger Förderpreis” will be presented for the third time in 2026. The Wittenstein Foundation and the Vogel Foundation Dr Eckernkamp have now decided to increase the award amount by 50,000 euros to 150,000 euros.

Researchers at the University of Würzburg are developing an AI system that analyses satellite images whilst they are still in space. Once there, it is even intended to be able to adapt to new tasks retrospectively – for example, to provide protection against natural disasters.
