From Bach to Piazzolla: concert at the university nursery

On 23 July, three students from the Würzburg University of Music will be performing at the Campus Kinderhaus. Playing the accordion, cello and violin, they will be bringing classical music to children aged between three and six.

It’s going to be a musical affair at the university’s nursery: students from the University of Music are giving a classical concert for the children.

For most young people, concert halls are not the sort of places they visit regularly – and certainly not for children. On 23 July, therefore, the music is coming to them: to the Campus Kinderhaus am Hubland, the nursery attached to the University of Würzburg (JMU). Three students from the Würzburg University of Music will be performing two short concerts there for the nursery children. The programme includes works ranging from Johann Sebastian Bach to Astor Piazzolla, listening and interactive activities, as well as fascinating facts about various instruments.

The performers will be Blaž Fir on the accordion, Anabel Lörcher on the cello and Rebekka Siimer on the violin. All three are supported as part of the ‘Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now’ programme. Its aim is to give young musicians performance experience whilst also bringing concerts to places where people would otherwise rarely come into contact with classical music.

Experiencing music where the children are

For the children at the Uni-KiTa, this will result in an age-appropriate concert experience featuring a presenter, short musical pieces and the chance to get to know various instruments up close. The exact programme will be tailored to the age group by the students as part of a course on concert pedagogy.

As well as listening, interactive elements also play a part in this musical journey: the children can take part in little puzzles, are introduced to the individual instruments and are allowed to ask the musicians their own questions.

“At our concert, the children experience music in a particularly direct way, because they don’t just listen, but see the instruments, compare sounds and engage in conversation with the musicians themselves,” says Jasmin Möller from the Chair of Business and Industrial Management at JMU. Möller is organising the event together with Professor Katharina Deserno from the University of Music.
