The University of Würzburg is among the top 100 scientific institutions with the biggest impact on innovation and industry worldwide. In the latest issue of the Nature Index 2017 Innovation tables, the University of Würzburg ranks 81st worldwide.

A top ranking in Germany

The Nature Index names the scientific institutions that supply the ideas behind the inventions and are hence particularly efficient in promoting the knowledge transfer into society. In addition to the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres and the Technical University of Munich, the University of Würzburg is thus one of the five most influential scientific institutions in Germany.

Authorities and governments are looking to demonstrate that publicly financed science is used to create products and services and hence innovations that benefit society and the labour market. One metric used to measure the impact science has on innovation is to determine the knowledge that leads to patents. The references in patents to literature allow measuring the influence of science on innovation.

How the ranking works

The Nature Index 2017 Innovation ranking weights this influence using the so-called normalised Lens Influence Metric which analyses and sorts the academic articles published by an institution cited in third-party patents. Moreover, the ranking considers the percentage of all natural science publications listed in the Nature Index. The Nature Index comprises 64 of the most prestigious natural science journals that together account for more than 30 percent of total citations in less than one percent of all scientific articles.

The excellent international result of the University of Würzburg in the field of innovation and knowledge transfer in the Nature Index 2017 Innovation ranking is based on its research excellence. This was recently confirmed in the latest issues of the Times Higher Education and the Shanghai Ranking. Together they are the leading indicators of academic quality in international comparison. The rankings placed the University of Würzburg among the top 200 universities worldwide and among the top 20 and 15 universities, respectively, in Germany.

Supported by the SFT
