User-driven media content became an integral part of our society – social networks are rapidly growing with hundred s of millions of photos and videos taken and posted daily. Data has also become the key component of digitization and transformation of today’s businesses globally – enterprises collect data on consumer preferences, purchases, and trends and use it to optimize their business models and strategies. Moreover ubiquitous trends of connecting physical objects to networks and enabling their communication and autonomous operation, known under the term Internet of Things (IoT) technology, bring perspectives to increase the amount of digital information stored, processed and exchanged daily to entirely new levels. However, these trends lead to increasing dependability on IT systems, which constitute an ever - growing attack surface and pose appealing challenges to IT professionals and to our society in general. This lecture touches upon the "dark side of digitalization" and especially on the importance of the current and future IT security research and the protection of user privacy.
