E-portfolio for schools reaches over 10,000 views
12/16/2025The Würzburg University Library supports schools with an innovative programme for basic scientific education.
The University Library's e-portfolio for schools has been an impressive success: since its launch two years ago, the online tool has already been used over 10,200 times. The portfolio helps secondary school and vocational school students to learn the basics of literature research, library use and scientific working methods.
The e-portfolio was developed and designed by the university library's information centre on the Mahara platform. It offers explanatory videos, interactive exercises, research tasks and thematic quizzes that can be integrated into lessons by teachers. The service is in high demand both regionally and nationally and is now firmly anchored in the everyday life of many school classes.
Training is also available on site
The great demand for this teaching programme is also evident locally: In the 2024/25 school year, around 1,850 pupils took advantage of the introductory courses at the Central Library on the Hubland Campus. Depending on the focus, participants either complete the "adventurer module" with a library rally or the "detective module" for thematic research. Both build on the basic knowledge previously taught in the e-portfolio.
With the portfolio, the University Library makes an important contribution to the early promotion of academic skills and at the same time strengthens the regional educational landscape. As a central institution of the JMU, it is thus setting an example for high-quality information transfer.
