Transformation experiment CampusBank

In the transformation experiment CampusBank, the direct desire of students for seating options on Campus is combined with ecological sustainability.
To address the lack of seating, so-called "CampusBenches" are being installed at Hubland Nord. These benches provide spaces where students, university staff, and other visitors to Hubland Nord can work, study, or simply relax. Surrounding these benches, small biotopes called Wuselflächen are being created. These areas, already established in other parts of the campus through the Living Campus Initiative, serve as stepping-stone habitats for various species, promoting biodiversity. Additionally, the project is being developed in collaboration with the transformation experiment L(i)ebenswerter Campus, also carried out by the Living Campus Initiative.
The aim is to combine everyday campus life at Hubland with environmental protection. The Wuselflächen are not standalone features; they are complemented by attractively designed informational signs. These signs enable visitors to understand how these several species create habitats for species, as recognizing how elements like deadwood and stone piles foster biodiversity is not always intuitive.
Furthermore, directional signs to the nearby CampusGarden at Hubland Nord will be placed near the benches. The CampusGarden is a student-led flagship project at JMU focused on sustainability, and this initiative seeks to draw attention to its location.
First CampusBenches Installed – Kickoff for the Transformation experiment
On May 16, 2025, we reached an important milestone for our transformation experiment CampusBank: The first benches were successfully installed on the campus of the University of Würzburg.
With these new seating areas, we are creating spaces for lingering, exchanging ideas, and networking – all in the spirit of a greener and more open university environment. The installation was a collaborative effort, with many helping hands coming together to turn the idea into reality.
Stay tuned for further updates and activities related to the CampusBank!
