Ecological University

Lebendiger Campus

When attending lectures and seminars on nature conservation at the Biozentrum, it quickly becomes apparent that there are also contradictions between scientific knowledge and actual practice on the university campus.

A working group founded in 2015 within the Ecology Department, together with the university’s Sustainability Commission, aims to identify ways to achieve more sustainable green space management.

In addition to making suitable green spaces more extensive, small biotopes are to be created and nesting aids installed. The existing fruit trees and shrubs may be supplemented as needed, and the possibilities for their use will be better communicated (“Picking allowed!”).

Initiative Lebendiger Campus

Since 2018, there has been an interdisciplinary working group called "Living Campus," in which students and researchers from several biology and philosophy departments, as well as representatives from the student Ecology Department, advocate for a biodiverse campus. In partnership with the university, the initiative will systematically document the existing biodiversity and work towards the sustainable (re)design of the grassland areas at the Hubland campus. The goal is to design the campus in a way that takes the needs of rare animal and plant species into account.

You can find the project website here.

This is a colorful meadow!

In 2017, an area in front of the Biozentrum was excluded from mowing, and an information board points out the project.

Edible Hubland

The Ecology Department has mapped it! We searched the entire Hubland for edible (wild) fruit, and yes—your university is edible! With over 100 edible shrubs and trees, you can almost provide for yourself and, instead of buying smoothies in plastic packaging, you can gather a fresh (organic) berry smoothie while strolling around campus.
