Sustainability at the JMU

Home to more than 30,000 people and a hotbed of innovation and ideas, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) wants to play a pioneering role in sustainability. The following pages describe what we are doing to integrate sustainability into our research, teaching and campus operations. Some of the information provided on these pages has been taken from the 2020/21 JMU sustainability report.

JMU mission statement

In her position as Vice-President of the University of Würzburg, Prof. Dr. Anja Schlömerkemper is responsible for the portfolio of 'equal opportunity, career planning and sustainability'.

The University of Würzburg has compiled a sustainability report for 2025. It presents the implementation status of the goals and measures from the sustainability strategy linked below.

A Strategy for More Sustainability

The University of Würzburg has adopted a sustainability strategy. The aim is to make significant progress in the major task of transforming into a sustainable university by 2028.

Prof. Dr. Anja Schlömerkemper is responsible for equal opportunity, career planning and sustainability in the University Board. In this video (german only), she talks about the six fields of action of the sustainability strategy. JMU is committed to anchoring education for sustainable development (ESD) in its degree programmes and wants to make sustainability research more visible in a sustainability map.

In order to make sustainability research at JMU more visible, a sustainability map has been created in collaboration with the WueLAB and the Chair of Computer Science VI. Anyone can enter projects that they are carrying out in the field of sustainability at the university:

How sustainable are we at the JMU?
The ‘Nachhaltige Hochschule: Kriterien zur Bestandsaufnahme’ project defines 45 criteria for surveying the status quo of sustainability at higher education institutions. They help universities implement sustainability across their activities.
