Project Presentation: Intercultural Learning Materials

11/25/2025

On Monday, 1 December, a new project from the WueDive project will be presented. Modern learning materials are intended to promote the intercultural competence of teachers. The event will be rounded off with a concert.

Viele Schulen sind kulturell bunt. Das neue Projekt möchte helfen. diesen Umstand sensibler und besser im Bildungswesen repräsentiert zu sehen.

Germany's cultural diversity is growing and Würzburg reflects this development: one third of Würzburg's residents are foreign nationals or have at least one parent of foreign nationality; in some schools, up to 50% of pupils have a migrant background.

Nevertheless, the diverse cultural expressions that can be found in schools have so far been underrepresented in the education system. In order to promote intercultural competence, self-esteem among minority learners and social cohesion, it is crucial to teach these cultures accurately and with sensitivity.

Music of our Neighbours: Designing Intercultural Learning Materials

However, teachers often have neither intercultural training nor easily accessible teaching materials. This is precisely where the project comes in: It trains future cultural mediators and art educators - i.e. students - and at the same time provides easily accessible, interactive learning materials for current teachers.

The basis for this is the Volkswagen Foundation-funded project "Music of our Neighbours" (running until March 2025), which has developed ethnographic research and professional film portraits of local artists with diverse cultural backgrounds. WueDive will utilise and extend these materials to jointly develop open extended reality learning resources. These digital tools are intended to support culturally sensitive art education and will be available in the long term.
