Teaching takes centre stage on the Day of Prayer and Repentance. On behalf of the university management, Professor Andreas Dörpinghaus, Vice President for Learning, Teaching and Quality Management, invites all teaching staff, students and interested employees of the University of Würzburg (JMU) to Tag der Lehre 2025 on Wednesday, 19 November 2025. The event will focus on the question of how AI skills can be taught in university teaching in a subject-specific and interdisciplinary way. The event is organised by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (ZBL). This year's motto is: "Hey ChatGPT - How does good university teaching actually work?" The event will be held in German.

Artificial Intelligence as an Urgent Topic for Teaching

Generative artificial intelligence has developed from a technical innovation to a key social issue in a very short space of time. AI tools have long been taken for granted at universities when searching for information, producing texts or analysing data, which raises fundamental questions about academic practice and the acquisition of skills.

The challenge for lecturers is to promote the responsible and reflective use of AI and to adapt their own teaching and examination formats to the changed conditions. AI is thus not only becoming an object of learning, but also a didactic tool and a touchstone of academic education as a whole.

Varied Programme with Award Ceremony

The Teaching Day will start with impulses from Professor Stephanie Catani, Chair of Modern German Literary History, and Dr. Claus Wannemacher from the HIS Institute for Higher Education Development. From their respective perspectives, they will show how artificial intelligence is transforming academic work, teaching and learning and opening up new forms of creative and critical debate.

Afterwards, the chairpersons of the student representatives will present the student awards for outstanding teaching. This year, they will be awarded in the category "Future-oriented teaching with artificial intelligence".

A Lot to Discover during the Lunch Break

In addition to a culinary offering, the lunch break provides an opportunity for dialogue, exercise and exploration. Anyone who wants to can provide feedback on the University of Würzburg's AI guidelines. The feedback will be incorporated into the further development of the guidelines. They will help to jointly define the responsible use of AI at JMU.

Writing tutors from the Writing Centre also offer exchange opportunities on AI tools and their use in academic writing and research.

The WueDive final exhibition invites you to look back on important project milestones visually, aurally and haptically and to discover what WueDive at the ZBL will provide after the end of the project.

If you want to recharge your batteries in between, take advantage of the Healthy University's active break.

Workshops and Specialist Lectures in the Afternoon

The afternoon programme will be organised by members of the JMU and external guests. The topic of "Artificial Intelligence in Teaching" can be explored in greater depth in workshops, discussion rounds and specialist lectures, depending on your own interests.

Dr. David Obremski and Professor Wolfgang Schröder, for example, will provide insights into the technological and ethical aspects of AI in their specialist lectures. Dr. Gabriele Blümig from the University Library will give a practical demonstration of how AI can be used profitably for literature research. The workshops by Dr. Thorsten Aichele (ZBL) and Dr. Thomas Schröter (University of Bern) will focus on the didactic use of AI with a focus on the aspects of mindfulness and self-regulation in learning.

Three Events in One Place

The Healthy University's anniversary event "10 Years of Conflict Management" will take place at 10 a.m. directly before the Teaching Day - with a lecture by Professor Roland Deutsch on the psychology of social conflicts in the workplace. In addition, the Office of the University Women's Representative will be organising a Bring Your Children Day for the first time.
