The Transformation Lab City and University of Würzburg has been bringing together city administrators and university researchers in pairs since May 2025. The tandems work together on solutions for sustainable urban development.

Their work is now at the centre of the exhibition "Ausgesprochen - Transformationslabor Stadt und Universität Würzburg". It will be opened on Thursday, 12 February 2026, at 18:00 in the foyer of the Würzburg Museum im Kulturspeicher. Guests are welcome; admission to the opening is free.

Anja Schlömerkemper, Vice President of the University of Würzburg: "The exhibition uses images, texts, quotes and short videos to visualise how cooperation between science and city administration opens up new spaces for action-oriented and science-based perspectives on sustainable urban development."

Lord Mayor Martin Heilig has accompanied and supported the innovative project from the very beginning: "The exhibition is not only intended as a documentation of joint work, but also as a platform for exchange, reflection and new impulses for future transformation processes that will further advance our city."

At the opening, all guests will have the opportunity to talk to those involved in science and administration and gain insights into the transformation lab.

Improv theatre: art and humour at the opening

After the exhibition opening, the improvisation theatre "Der Kaktus" will perform at around 18:45. In the one-hour performance, the ensemble will show in an artistic and humorous way how people from the university and city administration meet in the Transformation Lab.

Würzburg improvisation artist Carina Odenbreit explains: "A gathering of insects to plan the salvation of the world? A librarian who secretly plays chess with the house ghost after hours? An intelligent communication system that develops a surprising life of its own? When the Würzburg improvisation theatre company 'Der Kaktus' takes to the stage, anything is possible. Scenes emerge from the moment without a script or double bottom. In dialogue with the tandems and the audience, the ensemble explores the hidden stories between Würzburg's administration and science."

Opening hours of the exhibition

About the Transformation Lab

The Transformation Lab City and University of Würzburg is a joint project of the University's sustainability lab WueLAB and the City of Würzburg's Climate and Sustainability Department. It is made possible by the "Transformationslabor Hochschule" funding programme of the Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft.

The University of Würzburg is supporting the improvisation theatre's performance from its fund for science communication.

Works by Thomas Bayrle as a good complement

As an open space for art, culture, encounters and exchange, the Museum im Kulturspeicher (MiK) offers an ideal setting for the WueLAB exhibition. It fits into a larger thematic context in the immediate vicinity of the MiK exhibition ‘Thomas Bayrle. City, Country, Everything in Flux’ in a larger thematic context: Bayrle deals with urban and rural living spaces as well as the issue of transport. Both exhibitions invite visitors to reflect on sustainable urban development from both an artistic and a scientific-practical perspective.
