05/12/2026Dr Bernd-Stefan Vorderobermeier, former Head of the Department 2 Student Service Centre, was awarded the Julius-Maximilians Medal of Merit for his outstanding achievements at the 2026 Foundation Festival.
Bernd-Stefan Vorderobermeier was born on 9 September 1958 in Giengen an der Brenz. He began his professional career by studying law in Munich, specialising in civil law and administrative law.
His keen interest in structural interrelationships and legal precision became apparent early on, which he further deepened through supplementary studies at the University of Administrative Sciences (Hochschule für Verwaltungswissenschaften) in Speyer. His legal traineeship at the Higher Regional Court (Oberlandesgericht) of Munich laid the foundation for a career that has always combined theory and practice in an exemplary manner.
Bernd-Stefan Vorderobermeier's first professional stations in a law firm, at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics and at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft testify to his broad, varied experience and deep understanding of legal issues in a wide variety of contexts.
Stations at the University of Würzburg
His long and formative association with the University of Würzburg began in 1987. At the Institute for German and Foreign Procedural Law, he initially devoted himself to academia, completing his dissertation in 1991 on "The inclusion of general terms and conditions in commercial transactions with special consideration of the surprising clauses (§3 AGBG)".
After a brief detour as a government councillor (Regierungsrat) at the Federal Ministry of Transport, Bernd-Stefan Vorderobermeier returned to the university in 1993. In positions of responsibility, first as Head of the Legal Department (Justiziariat) and later as Head of the Department 2 Student Service Centre, he took on central tasks for the university. Following positions as Senior Government Councillor (Oberregierungsrat) and Government Director (Regierungsdirektor), he was finally appointed Senior Government Director (Leitender Regierungsdirektor) in 2006.
Providing guidance and demonstrating foresight
With great commitment, clear judgement and impressive leadership skills, he shaped processes, further developed structures and made a significant contribution to the successful organisation and further development of the university. Whether as head of important projects such as the registry regulations or the introduction of the MUCK card, as data protection officer or as Bologna coordinator - Bernd-Stefan Vorderobermeier has taken on responsibility, provided orientation and accompanied developments with foresight.
But it is not only the offices and functions that characterise Bernd-Stefan Vorderobermeier. Above all, it is the person: his always open ear for the concerns of the employees, his loyalty, his clear attitude and human approach and his pronounced sense of team spirit.
His retirement in September 2024 marks the end of an important chapter - not only for him personally, but also for the University of Würzburg. At the same time, there remains gratitude for what he accomplished and for the legacy he leaves behind.
Bernd-Stefan Vorderobermeier is a personality who has decisively shaped the face of the University of Würzburg over many decades with great reliability, legal expertise and extraordinary commitment.
