Under the title “#einzigartig – Darfs etwas Süßes sein?" (Fancy something sweet?), the University Library of Würzburg invites you to a guided tour of a selection of handwritten and printed cookery books. The works on display date from various periods and reflect the Franconian culinary and everyday culture of their time. Among the items on display are a handwritten cookbook from the circle of Julius Friedrich Freiherr Wolffskeel von Reichenberg, the Neue Fränkische Kochbuch (New Franconian Cookbook), the Würzburger Kochbuch (Würzburg Cookbook) published around 1930, the Kartoffel- und Obst-Köchin (Potato and Fruit Cook) and a baking book by Amely Sprenger, headmistress of the Würzburg Cooking School.

As sources of everyday life, historical cookbooks convey far more than just recipes. They provide insights into (past) ways of life, social developments and regional traditions. The guided tour presents selected original items from the University Library’s special collections and places them in their cultural-historical context.

The event is part of the #einzigartig series, through which the University Library regularly showcases special manuscripts, prints and other treasures from its collections to the public.

The guided tour will be held in German and starts on Thursday, 23 July 2026, at 6 pm in the reading room of the Special Collections at the Central Library on Hubland. Participation is free of charge; no registration is required.
