An evening of chamber music

The University’s Academic Orchestra invites you to a chamber music soirée at the Neubaukirche on Thursday 9 July. Admission is free.

Works by Handel, Emilie Mayer, Bartók, Popper, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Paganini and Reich: this is what awaits visitors when the chamber music ensemble from the University of Würzburg’s Academic Orchestra performs at the Neubaukirche.

The concert will take place on Thursday, 9 July 2026, from 8.00 pm at the University’s Neubaukirche, Domerschulstraße 16. It will last approximately one hour. Admission is free; donations are welcome. Markus Popp is responsible for overall coordination.

Programme:

  • Chaconne by George Frideric Handel, arranged for violin and cello.
  • Two movements from the String Quartet in G minor by Emilie Mayer, one of the leading female composers of the 19th century.
  • A selection from Bartók’s Duos Sz 89.
  • A short Requiem by David Popper, who chose a distinctive instrumentation for this work: three cellos accompanied by a piano.
  • ‘Sentimental Waltz’ from Op. 51 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, for cello and piano
  • Two movements from Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D major
  • ‘Cantabile’ by Nicolò Paganini
  • Steve Reich, ‘Clapping Music for Two Performers’

About the orchestra

Founded in 1955, the University of Würzburg Academic Orchestra is made up of students from various faculties. Its work focuses on performing challenging symphonic works. The orchestra performs in and around Würzburg as well as on tours across Europe.
