Our Research Infrastructures
High-performance research infrastructures are essential for excellence in research, teaching and transfer. These include physical infrastructures such as (major) instrumentation, laboratories and facilities, as well as research-based services and knowledge resources like collections and databases.
At JMU, various research infrastructures are organised into thematic hubs (RI Hubs). This structure fosters cross-disciplinary synergies, accelerates innovation and promotes efficient resource utilisation.
The Hub for Cancer Research brings together facilities such as
-
the NCT WERA,
-
the CCC Mainfranken,
-
the Würzburg Tumor Registry and
dedicated to cancer research and the development of new therapeutic approaches.
The Bioimaging Hub provides – through
-
the Rudolf Virchow Center and
-
the Biocenter
– state-of-the-art imaging methods and analytical pipelines to investigate disease-related structures and mechanisms from individual molecules to the complex architecture of living systems.
The Hub for Biomaterial Research provides – through the Centre of Polymers for Life – a technology platform for the development and study of innovative polymers, as well as for the production and testing of artificial functional 3D tissue models for medical applications – helping to reduce the need for animal testing.
The Hub for Molecular Research – including
-
the Center for Nanosystems Chemistry and
-
the Institute for Sustainable Chemistry & Catalysis with Boron –
provides a technology platform that supports the targeted development of novel functional materials and the optimisation of existing manufacturing processes.
The Hub for Artificial Intelligence and Data Sciences includes
-
and the XR HUB Bavaria Würzburg,
fostering AI-driven data analysis for innovative knowledge-based applications.
The Research Infrastructure Hub for Scientific Collections brings together more than 30 scientific collections – ranging from zoological specimens to archaeological artifacts, including the collection of antiquities at Martin von Wagner Museum.
The Würzburg Centre for Ancient Studies brings together expertise to explore the languages, history and culture of Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East from the origins of human civilisation to the end of antiquity.
Affiliated Research Centers
Our university works closely with affiliated research centres such as the Max Planck, Helmholtz and Fraunhofer Institutes. These collaborations combine excellent basic research with innovative applications, promote early career researchers and strengthen our international visibility.
