A wide range of information on World Stroke Day
10/13/2026To mark World Stroke Day on 24 October, experts from Würzburg University Hospital will be providing information on recognising, treating and preventing strokes. Registration is required.
How can you recognise a stroke – and what needs to be done as quickly as possible? What role do cardiac arrhythmias, narrowed carotid arteries and elevated blood sugar and blood lipid levels play? Answers to these and other questions will be provided at an information day organised by Würzburg University Hospital (UKW) to mark World Stroke Day 2026. The event is aimed at patients, their relatives and anyone else who is interested.
It will take place on Saturday, 24 October 2026, from 10.00 am at the German Centre for Heart Failure (DZHI), Am Schwarzenberg 15, Building A15, in Würzburg.
Following a welcome address by Dr Christian Hametner from the UKW’s Department of Neurology, experts from various disciplines will deliver short talks addressing key issues relating to stroke and stroke prevention.
Stroke recognition and pre-hospital procedures
What symptoms are particularly characteristic of a stroke? What should be done first in an emergency – and why does every minute count? Dr Andreas Klinger from the Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Pain Management will answer these questions.
When the heart loses its rhythm
How are cardiac arrhythmias and stroke linked? Why does atrial fibrillation in particular increase the risk? And what options are there for taking timely action? Professor Thomas Fischer from the First Department of Internal Medicine provides information on this.
Blocked carotid artery – what to do?
How dangerous is a narrowing of the carotid artery? When is medication sufficient, and when is surgery advisable? What procedures are available? These questions will be explored by Dr Frank Schönleben from the Department of General, Visceral, Transplant, Vascular and Paediatric Surgery, and Dr Marius Vogt from the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology.
Out of control blood sugar and lipids?
How do elevated bloodsugar and blood lipid levels affect the risk of stroke? What levels should you be aware of, and what preventive measures can be taken? Dr Alicja Kunikowska from Medical Clinic and Polyclinic I will provide answers to these questions.
The lecture programme concludes at 11.45 am with a summary by Dr Hametner.
Examinations and medical simulations
In addition to the lectures, visitors can find out interesting facts about strokes at information stands in the foyer. From 12 noon, free examinations and medical simulations will also be offered in the seminar rooms. These include a duplex/Doppler ultrasound scan of the blood vessels supplying the brain. In addition, specialists in interventional neuroradiology will demonstrate how blood clots can be removed from cerebral vessels. Another simulation from the field of interventional cardiology will focus on the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
Attendance at the information day is free of charge.
Registration is required by 19 October 2026 at the latest via an online form on the UKW website, available at www.ukw.de/neurologie under the ‘Events’ section.
