Wednesday, 29 October 2025, is this year's World Stroke Day. The University Hospital of Würzburg (UKW) is using the date for a broad-based information event. "Under the slogans 'Educate. Network. Act', we are addressing in two consecutive parts of the programme on one hand the interested public. On the other hand, we are offering medical colleagues an update," explains Dr Christian Hametner. The senior physician at the Neurological Clinic of the UKW is head of the Stroke Unit there, is the general manager of the TRANSIT-Stroke telemedicine network and acts as spokesperson for the Lower Franconia Neurovascular Network.

Part I: Lectures and Live Demos for Patients

For the first target group of patients, their relatives and other interested parties, there will be four parallel blocks of topics after an introduction at 13:00 in the lecture theatre of the Centre for Operative Medicine (ZOM) on Oberdürrbacher Straße until 16:00.

Divided into four seminar rooms, over 20 specialist presentations will address many relevant aspects, such as: How do you recognise a stroke, what needs to happen afterwards and why does every minute count? Why can a sudden loss of vision also indicate a stroke? What are the risk factors for a stroke? How does the Lower Franconia Neurovascular Network ensure that you receive the best possible diagnosis and treatment in an emergency? What operations and interventions are possible in the event of a stroke and what can the next steps be afterwards? How can relatives support those affected? What does the Hentschel Foundation "Fight the Stroke" do?

Live demonstrations will also provide an insight into the work of the 112 integrated control centre, allow a look behind the scenes of emergency care with a tour of an ambulance and show in a simulation how a blood clot is removed from a cerebral artery using a catheter.

In addition, experts will be available to answer individual questions at numerous information stands from 13:30 to 16:00.

Part II: Update on diagnostics and therapy for doctors

Specific information for general practitioners, neurologists and other medical colleagues will follow at 4.30 pm. Experts from the UKW and renowned guest speakers will provide an update on the diagnosis and treatment of stroke until 8.00 pm.
