Teaching in motion

03/17/2026

Movement in lectures is didactically beneficial and promotes the health. A series of events shows what active teaching can look like. It starts on Wednesday, March 25.

The Center for Teaching and Learning (ZBL) at the University of Würzburg, in cooperation with the Healthy University, is focusing on the active design of courses with a series of events. Four online sessions will highlight how teaching settings can be designed to promote student motivation, reduce cognitive overload, and support learning processes in the long term.

In keeping with the Healthy University's motto for the year, “Let's get ready,” the series invites participants to consciously design teaching to be engaging, to consider the needs of students and teachers, and to set out on the path to excellent, health-promoting teaching. Each session is self-contained. Lecturers at the University of Würzburg can attend individual events independently of the others.

The Lecture and the workshops will be held in German.

Kick-off lecture on teaching approaches

The series begins with the online lecture “Lehrqualität durch Ressourcenaktivierung – Gesundheit als Zugang zu exzellenter Hochschullehre”. Based on current empirical findings, Dr. Robert Rupp (Heidelberg University of Education) provides inspiration for needs-oriented teaching approaches that enable learning performance, learning motivation, and well-being. To this end, he will present a resource-activating model that systematically links movement and needs orientation with learning quality.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The workshop program in June

In June, there will be three short digital formats with direct practical relevance, in which teachers will learn about specific starting points for implementation in different teaching formats:

On Friday, June 12, 2026, “Hörsaal in Motion” (Lecture Hall in Motion) will show how even large lectures can be structured with activating elements without losing teaching time. The focus will be on interventions that increase attention and participation.

On Friday, June 19, 2026, “Bewegtes Lernen in, mit und für die Natur” (Active Learning in, with, and for Nature) will focus on embodied learning and planetary health. It will address the question of how learning spaces can be expanded and learning processes designed to be physically and spatially experiential.

On Friday, June 26, 2026, “Active Seminar” will focus on making seminars more dynamic. Formats that promote presence, dialogue, and collaboration and can be integrated into existing seminar structures will be presented.
