JMU presents first report on the implementation of its sustainability strategy
03/31/2026In the 30-page Sustainability Report 2025, the University of Würzburg provides information on the status of implementation of its sustainability strategy. The report is now available online.
With ambitious goals, the University of Würzburg set out to implement its sustainability strategy in 2024. The results have now been summarised in the Sustainability Report 2025. The report can be downloaded as a pdf file from the JMU sustainability website .
In line with the sustainability strategy, the report highlights the six fields of action of research, studying and teaching, governance, operations, student engagement and transfer. It focusses on the overarching goals and presents the extent to which they have been achieved.
Conclusion and flagship projects
After a critical self-assessment, the University of Würzburg considers itself to be in the best of three categories for 13 of 32 objectives. For 14 goals, it states that it is in the process of realising them or is pursuing them ambitiously. "For five of the 32 goals, we are not as far along as we had hoped," says JMU Vice President Anja Schlömerkemper. "We will now address these goals with particular vigour."
Flagship projects include the scientifically oriented sustainability laboratory WueLAB, the concept for the further development of education for sustainable development at JMU, which has been recognised by UNESCO, the further strengthening of student engagement and constructive cooperation with the city and society.
In a second document ("Monitoring the measures and goals for the individual fields of action"), JMU describes the indicators and measures in their implementation in a detailed table. It can also be viewed on the university's sustainability website .
The report names a number of best-practice examples. For the presentation of the many activities in the fields of action, links from the table refer to the sustainability websites, in particular to the sustainability map.
A task for the entire university community
The topic of sustainability is deeply rooted at the University of Würzburg and represents a core strategic objective.
With the publication of the Sustainability Report 2025, the university management is emphasising its commitment to continuously drive forward the transformation process towards a sustainable university. It calls on the university community to continue to get involved and to work continuously on the implementation of the sustainability strategy in line with a holistic approach.
