For students: University of Excellence info point at the canteens

The information stand offers the opportunity to find out first-hand about the requirements and opportunities in the current competition. On 2 February 2026 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the information stand will be set up in the canteen at the Hubland South Campus, and on 4 February 2026 in the canteen at the Studentenhaus in the city centre - also from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On site, University President Paul Pauli and Vice President Caroline Kisker (Hubland) and Vice President Matthias Bode (City Canteen) will be available for discussions and to answer questions about the application for excellence. There will also be punch and a prize draw for students.

Information event for employees on 25 March

A digital information event for employees is also planned for 25 March 2026: The focus will be on the review process by the international review panel on 15 and 16 April as well as the central focal points of the excellence application. An official invitation will be sent out shortly.

Background information

The University of Würzburg has a special opportunity to be included in the group of German Universities of Excellence from 2027. This coveted title is awarded by the federal and state governments in a tough competition, the Excellence Strategy. It is associated with millions in funding that strengthens the university as a whole rather than individual departments.

JMU submitted its application in mid-November 2025. The next important date is the on-site visit by an international review panel on 15 and 16 April. In October, the German Research Foundation and the German Council of Science and Humanities will announce the results of the review and thus the universities that will be funded as Universities of Excellence.
