Shooting: Medals for JMU staff member

03/31/2026

Eva Östreicher deals with personnel matters in Department 4.4 at the University of Würzburg. In her spare time, she is an active sports shooter - most recently successfully competing in the European Compressed Air Championships in Armenia.

Are there parallels between shooting and working in the HR department? "I have to be very focussed in both," says Eva Östreicher. At the University of Würzburg, she deals with contracts of all kinds for academic support staff. In her spare time, she is a passionate sports shooter - and extremely successful at it. She has already shot at the Bavarian, German, World and European Championships, most recently in March 2026 at the European Compressed Air Championships in Armenia's capital Yerevan. She won two bronze medals there with the running target team.

Specialist for a rare discipline

"The moving target is also a marginal discipline in shooting sports, and not all shooting clubs have a facility for it," explains Eva Östreicher. The target is shot at from right to left. With an air rifle, this is done from a distance of ten metres; the target travels along a so-called lane with a length of two metres. The normal programme consists of 30 shots twice. First with 5 seconds "travelling time", then with 2.5 seconds. In the mixed programme, both speeds are shot mixed, whereby the shooter does not know at which speed the target is coming.

More information about the running target can be found on the Instagram channelrunningtarget_germany.

The results from the individual competitions of the three participants from each nation are combined into a team score. In both variants, the German trio with Eva Östreicher ultimately finished in bronze place. "The medals are a great thing. However, my big dream would be to win an individual medal at international competitions in the future," says the unerring JMU employee.

Into the shooting club via her brother

She has already achieved this several times at the Bavarian and German championships, eventually making the leap into the national squad. Eva Östreicher was once introduced to shooting by her older brother: "As is the case when your brother does something, as a little sister you often want to imitate him." In her opinion, what does it take to be a good shooter? "The ability to concentrate, strong nerves and a steady hand."

Eva Östreicher shoots for the SV-DJK Sommerach club. Although the European Championships in Yerevan were not her first international competition - she won silver and bronze at the European Championships in France in 2025 - they were still a highlight. "It was a great organised event with a beautiful opening ceremony. A positive side effect this time was that we had some free time. We were able to explore Yerevan a little on a city tour. The exchange with the international athletes is always something special, especially in our small discipline."
