A week of action for sustainability
11/03/2026As part of the nationwide Public Climate School, the University of Würzburg is offering a varied programme during the week of 9 to 15 November 2026, under the motto ‘Learning, understanding and taking action together’.
From 9 to 15 November 2026, Würzburg will once again be all about climate education and sustainable development: the Public Climate School (PCS) invites students, lecturers, university staff and the interested public to a varied week of activities. Under the nationwide motto ‘Learning, understanding and taking action together’, the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) and the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences (THWS) are bringing their programmes together across institutions for the first time.
This marks the fifth time that JMU has taken part in the Public Climate School. The week of activities is being coordinated by the WueLAB sustainability laboratory. The programme combines academic perspectives with practical approaches and demonstrates how sustainability can be embedded in research, teaching and society.
The programme
Among the highlights of this year’s programme is, for example, a lecture by Prof. Dr Singer-Brodowski on 9 November. Under the title ‘Culture(s) of Sustainability at Universities and the (Im)possibility of Transforming One’s Own University’, she will explore how universities can actively shape sustainable development.
On 10 November, there will be a hands-on session with the STEM simulation game ‘Smart Technology Needs Smart Minds’. This event is aimed particularly at teacher training students and uses a playful approach to demonstrate how technology, sustainability and educational work can interact.
On 11 November, Monica Baudracco-Kastner invites participants to the workshop ‘Diversity Meets Sustainability – Thinking About and Experiencing ESD from an Intercultural Perspective’. Participants will explore the links between Education for Sustainable Development and intercultural perspectives, and develop new approaches to sustainable action in a diverse society.
Anyone wishing to test their knowledge of climate and sustainability should make a note of the Climate Pub Quiz ‘Climate Check: Know. Guess. Win.’ on 12 November. This joint event organised by THWS and JMU combines exciting questions, team spirit and discussion in a relaxed atmosphere.
But these examples are not all there is: in total, participants can currently choose from up to eight events each day across the various faculties. Most events do not require registration, whilst a few do.
Making teaching for sustainability visible
As well as the supporting programme, the Public Climate School thrives on the participation of teaching staff. Staff from all faculties are warmly invited to open their courses to the action week and to incorporate sustainability topics into their teaching. Whether through individual discussion prompts, thematic focuses or entire courses: every form of participation helps to make sustainability visible in study and teaching. Extracurricular activities and events organised by student initiatives are also welcome.
The WueLAB compiles all participating seminars, lectures and other events into a joint programme for students, university staff and the interested public. Contributions can be submitted by email to wuelab@uni-wuerzburg.de.
