Ten new trainees at the university
09/08/2026The University of Würzburg invited its new trainees to a welcome day. The programme included icebreaker games, a visit to the canteen and a campus rally.
When people think of a university, the first things that spring to mind are students and researchers. But universities are more than that – they also offer vocational training in many different fields.
On average, there are around 50 trainees working at the University of Würzburg. On 1 September 2026, ten new trainees started: five chemical laboratory assistants, three biology laboratory assistants, one IT specialist and one specialist in media and information services.
To welcome the new recruits and help them settle in, the Youth and Trainee Representative Committee (Jugend- und Auszubildendenvertretung, JAV) once again organised a welcome day. This time it took place in the Central Library on the Hubland Campus and, for the first time, in collaboration with the JMU Professional Development department.
An important part of the university community
Following a welcome address by Chancellor Dr Uwe Klug and the Head of the University Library, Dr Hans-Günter Schmidt, the Chancellor gave an overview of the university and its long tradition. He also addressed the new members of the university community personally: “I am delighted that you have found your way to our university,” said Klug. Even though the number of trainees is small compared to the 26,000 students, they are nonetheless an equal part of the university community.
Caterina Schmitz from Professional Development chaired the welcome day. Among other things, she invited the participants to take part in an ‘icebreaker round’: in small groups, the new trainees visited information stands run by key departments and were able to ask questions there. Representatives from the Staff Council, the Youth and Trainee Representative Committee (JAV), the University Library, the ‘Healthy University’ initiative, the Human Resources Department and the Professional Development team were in attendance.
After a group lunch in the canteen, the JAV had organised a campus rally and a guided tour of the Mineralogical Museum for the afternoon.
