In a nationwide competition, Würzburg medical student Salma Abosabie came out on top against numerous competitors. As one of thirteen students, the financial consultant MLP is supporting her with a Medical Excellence Scholarship. Salma Abosabie receives the MLP Medical Excellence Scholarship in the Science category, one of three award categories.

The final step in the selection process was an assessment centre at the company headquarters in Wiesloch, Baden-Württemberg. In addition to a presentation, the approximately 150 participants also completed a group exercise in which they took on various roles from the world of medicine. The latter was not decided by a jury; the potential scholarship holders assessed their performance amongst themselves. Salma Abosabie was able to impress and can now look forward to a grant of 4,000 euros.

Doctorate as the basis

The basis for the application was the medical student's doctorate. In it, she is investigating possible links between rare blood disorders and an increased risk of thrombosis: "The diseases I am working on are called myeloproliferative neoplasms. It is known that platelets increase the risk of thrombosis in those affected. We are investigating another cell type, namely endothelial cells, to find out whether they also play a role in the increased frequency of thrombosis," explains Salma Abosabie.

"PJ" stay in the USA planned

Salma Abosabie completed the laboratory work for her doctorate at the Haematology Department of the Yale Cancer Center and at the Yale Cardiovascular Research Center at the renowned Yale University in Connecticut (USA).

She would also like to return to the United States for part of her PJ (practical year) from September 2026. The scholarship is a welcome support for this endeavour.
