Lecture series: 450 years of Juliusspital

04/07/2026

At the time of its foundation, the Juliusspital in Würzburg - alongside similar institutions in France, Italy and the Netherlands - was one of the most modern large-scale hospital buildings of its time. Like all hospitals, it was primarily a care and nursing facility. Over time, however, it was transformed into a teaching hospital for the Faculty of Medicine in Würzburg.

At the University of Würzburg, the lecture series "450 years of the Juliusspital. Caring - Healing - Teaching" is taking the anniversary of the Juliusspital as an opportunity to present various aspects of hospital life in the early modern period. The triad "Caring - Healing - Teaching" already refers to the numerous actors whose activities characterised hospital life.

Prelude: Rivalry between hospital and university

The series begins on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, at 19:00 with a lecture by Professor Sabine Schlegelmilch, Head of the JMU Institute for the History of Medicine. She will speak on the topic "Who owns the sick? The rivalry between hospital and university."

The lecture series is open to all interested parties. The lectures take place on Tuesdays at 19:00 in lecture theatre 318 at the University on Sanderring.

Registration is not necessary; admission is free. Those who wish can participate online via Zoom. Further information can be found on the lecture series website.

Organisation of the lecture series

The lecture series is organised by the University's Collegium for Medieval & Early Modern Studies in cooperation with the Graduate School for the Humanities, the Studium Generale and the Katholische Akademie Domschule Würzburg. The organiser is Professor Sabine Schlegelmilch.
