The university in the media

05/26/2026

JMU and its scientists are always well represented in the media. Here are some recent examples.

Football and FC Bayern: JMU fan researcher professor Harald Lange explains why the prank by 1860 supporters at the FC Bayern championship celebrations was so unusual in an interview in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Mars rover: The team of computer science professor Marco Schmidt has developed a Mars rover with innovative wheels. There were media reports on this in the Frankfurter Rundschau and other media.

Infection medicine: The founding of the Bavarian Centre for Preventive Infection Medicine (BZI) was reported on by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, among others. President of the new centre is JMU professor Oliver Kurzai, Director of the University's Institute of Hygiene and Microbiology.

Running: JMU sports professor and training scientist Billy Sperlich explained in the Spiegel how children can train and why early endurance sport is often not a good idea. Sperlich was also quoted in Der Spiegel, the Süddeutsche Zeitung and many other media for his collaboration with the athlete Sabastian Sawe, who was the first person to run a marathon in under two hours.

University history: To celebrate its 625th anniversary in 2027, the University of Würzburg is planning a new museum dedicated to the university's history. The regional broadcaster TV Mainfranken reports on the project.
