Renowned chemistry journal appoints Frank Würthner to its editorial team
10/13/2026Frank Würthner, a professor of chemistry at the University of Würzburg, has been appointed as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Frank Würthner, Chair of Organic Chemistry II and Director of the Center for Nanosystems Chemistry at the University of Würzburg, has been appointed by the American Chemical Society as an associate editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS). Since October 1, 2026, the Würzburg professor is accordingly a member of the editorial team of the Society’s most prestigious and important journal, which was founded in 1879.
This is a special honour for Frank Würthner and the University of Würzburg, as, apart from him, from Germany only Max Planck Institute directors are currently entrusted with this role.
An exciting role awaits the professor
“The journal is one of the few chemistry journals in which all researchers in the field would like to see their best work published. That is why the role of Associate Editor is so exciting – you get to see top-class new research findings at an early stage,” says Frank Würthner.
Each Associate Editor is responsible for a specific sub-field of chemistry within the journal. The Würzburg professor will be responsible for topics in supramolecular chemistry, organic materials chemistry and photochemistry.
First paper published in JACS whilst a PhD student
Frank Würthner himself has now published 69 papers in JACS. The first of these stems from his PhD thesis in Stuttgart in 1995, followed by four from his habilitation in Ulm. All of the remaining 64 publications were produced during his time in Würzburg, where the chemist has been conducting research and teaching since 2002.
