The lawyer and former prison director Dr Thomas Galli is known for his criticism of the prison system. On 4 December, he will be speaking at the University of Würzburg about the alternative he envisages.

During his many years as a prison governor and lawyer specialising in criminal law, Dr Thomas Galli, who holds a doctorate in law, came to the conclusion that prison sentences often neither increase the safety of the general public nor are they fair. He has developed a vision of what a more sensible approach to crime could look like and has incorporated his practical experience into these considerations.

What does this vision look like? Anyone interested can find out on Thursday, 4 December 2025, at the University of Würzburg. Thomas Galli will be giving a public lecture (in German) entitled "Punishment without meaning? Why prisons often do more harm than good - and how things could be better".

The lecture and discussion will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in presence in room 02.206 of the university building on Wittelsbacherplatz. It is part of the event series "Intercultural Competence in Special Needs Education" organised by the Chair of Special Needs Education - Behavioural Disorders.
