The University at the Würzburg City Festival

The University will once again be taking part in the Würzburg City Festival on 19 September: this time, the Science Mile will be located in front of TK Maxx on Schönbornstraße.

JMU’s stand at the 36th City Festival promises a varied mix of science, research and hands-on activities. From 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday 19 September, various faculties and departments will be inviting visitors to try out new things and chat with academics.

The Faculty of Arts is taking part for the first time. Languages, history, culture, geography: the faculty invites visitors to discover its diversity and its wide range of degree programmes and research fields. Here, visitors can chat with academics and students about the past, present and future.

How do you build computers for rockets? The student-run association WüSpace, which is also taking part in the city festival for the first time, will use hands-on experiments to demonstrate how software and homemade radio transmitters send data through space and how rovers navigate on Earth and Mars. There will also be information available on the Aerospace Informatics degree programme.

The Central Student Advisory Service will be providing prospective students, current students, parents and anyone else interested with information on the university’s wide range of degree programmes. The team will offer advice on applications and choosing a degree programme, and will also present opportunities such as the senior citizens’ programme and guest student programmes.

Things are also set to be exciting at the stand run by the Chair of Food Chemistry: here, young and old alike can use an IR device to determine the sugar or alcohol content in drinks themselves – anyone who wishes to can bring their own drinks along for analysis.

The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy is hosting fun, hands-on experiments for all age groups. A highlight: chocolate marshmallow kisses burst in a vacuum, clearly demonstrating the effects of air pressure.

The Institute of Mathematics aims to convince visitors that maths is neither boring nor incomprehensible. In an interactive game, you can ‘untangle’ graphs and admire geometric shapes that seem exotic at first glance but play an important role in everyday life. The team also demonstrates how, through simply defined processes, fractals that repeat infinitely often suddenly emerge.

The Faculty of Management and Economics is presenting its diverse range of degree programmes – from Economics and Business Informatics to Digital Business & Data Science. Interactive hands-on activities offer the chance to experience basic economic principles in a playful way – for young and old alike.

What do theologians study? What does theology still have to say today? What are the key areas of focus for theology in Würzburg? You’ll find the answers at the Faculty of Catholic Theology’s stand. The team will also provide information on the faculty’s diverse range of degree programmes and events.

At the Chair of Nursing Science, visitors can gain insights into study programmes and research – ranging from innovative care for the elderly and digital technologies to health literacy. Visitors can test their knowledge and contribute their own ideas for the future of nursing.
