On 27 October 2026, from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm in Z6, Dr Ibrahim Sani will give a lecture entitled 'Soil Degradation and Regeneration in the Sahel Zone: Geomorpho-pedological Approach-based Solutions as a Basis for Triggering Natural and Durable Regeneration Processes' as part of the Geography Colloquium.

About the talk

Sahelian countries are currently facing continuous degradation of croplands used by more than 80% of rural population. Several soil protection and regeneration actions have been undertaken, but most have proven to be ineffective and unsustainable. The main objective of this research is to investigate and propose natural and local solutions capable of enabling the regeneration of degraded soils, improving ecosystem resilience, and consequently combating desertification
in the Sahel in general and particularly in Niger. This proposition is based on conclusive results from field observations and experiments and the study proposes precisely two research actions focused on investigations on regeneration potential of the local traditional practice of livestock parking in farms and the potential of reviving local Sahelian bryophyte dissemination on eroded soils.
