Understanding, designing and using AI: A practical workshop for students

Artificial intelligence is transforming science, culture and the world of work – and faster than many realise. It can write texts, design images, analyse data, hold conversations and support decision-making. Sounds like science fiction? It’s long since become a reality. But what does this mean for you as a student? Where do the opportunities lie, where are the challenges – and how can you make good use of AI today in your studies, research and future careers?

In this two-part workshop – each session lasting four hours – you’ll gain a clear and practical introduction to the world of AI. In the first session, you’ll learn the basic terminology and technologies and find out how AI works. You’ll explore the opportunities and limitations of this technology and, through practical exercises, discover how AI can support you in your studies: with research, structuring and writing, with translations, or in the creative design of text and images.

The second part of the workshop delves deeper into practical application and focuses on critical reflection and future prospects, as AI is capable of far more than simply generating text and images. We’ll also take a look at the world of work: What new fields of work are emerging as a result of AI, and how can you start building your own ‘AI portfolio’ whilst you’re still studying?

The course is deliberately designed to be interactive: you won’t just be listening, but will actively work with AI tools, raise your own questions and broaden your perspectives through discussion with other students. All you need to bring with you is curiosity and an open mind.

Speaker: Dr Claudia Leikam, AI coach, researcher, CCO at vAudience
