PhD Candidates Vogel Group

Jakob Jung
Title: Programming antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs)

Promotion Committee:
Prof. Dr. Jörg Vogel (Supervisor, Würzburg)
Jun. Prof. Dr. Lars Barquist (Würzburg)
Dr. Ana Rita Brochado (Würzburg)

Jakob completed his MSc in Biotechnology with a focus on computational biology at the Wageningen University in 2019. During his Msc internship at the University of Girona, he used metagenomics data to identify bacteria associated with type 2 diabetes. He joined the Vogel lab in 2020 and is currently working on programmable, specific anti-sense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to target pathogenic microorganisms. Outside the lab he enjoys playing field hockey and reading.

Yan Zhu
Title: Identification and characterization of RNA-binding-proteins in cancer-associated Fusobacterium nucleatum

Promotion Committee:
Prof. Dr. Jörg Vogel(Supervisor, Würzburg)
Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr. med. Christoph U. Schoen(Würzburg)
Prof. Dr. Dagmar Beier(Würzburg)

Yan Zhu obtained her MSc in Bioengineering from the Wuhan Institute of Virology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in June 2018. During her master studies, she worked on the mechanism of the transcription initiation process in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. She joined the Vogel group for an internship in June 2019. From September 2019, she continued as a PhD student to focus on the discovery and characterization of RNA-binding proteins in the cancer-associated oral cavity germ Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Sandra Pérez Jiménez
Title: xx

Sandra obtained her MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a focus on molecular microbiology at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in 2021. She constructed and characterized riboswitch-based biosensors (ribosensors) to study the role of vitamin B12 in mycobacterial pathogenicity. Her special interest in infection biology and antimicrobials encouraged her to join Vogel's lab in February 2022. Currently, she is working on programmable antisense oligomer (ASO)-based antibiotics against bacterial pathogens of clinical relevance. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and running in the mountains, as well as travelling and discovering new cultures.

Leandro Buhlmann
Title:

Supervisor:
Prof. Dr. Jörg Vogel (Würzburg)
Promotion Committee:
Prof. Dr. Jörg Vogel (Würzburg)

Leandro Buhlmann obtained his MSc in biochemistry with a focus on molecular life science at the University of Würzburg in 2021. For his master's project, he joined a research group at the Technical University of Munich (Germany), where he established an electrochemiluminescent immunoassay (ECLIA) with the ability to specifically detect exosome bound programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). Due to his interest in the potential of antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) application in medical treatment, he decided to join the Vogel group in 2023, where he is currently investigating the reaction of bacterial cells to ASO treatment.
