SCIENTIA Scholarship Programme

Excellent junior female scientists at JMU can apply for the SCIENTIA scholarship programme: It supports women in a transitional phase between two career steps, to initiate third-party funding, to be able to complete a post-doctoral project, etc.

Objective of the Funding and Award Criteria

The aim of the funding is to qualify junior female scientists for a professorship or a leading position.

The SCIENTIA scholarships are funded from the special appropriation in the Bavarian state budget for the realisation of equal opportunities for women in research and teaching (Bavarian Equal Opportunities Promotion).

Award Criteria

SCIENTIA supports junior female academics in transitional phases in the event that further qualification is not immediately possible (e.g. due to third-party funded projects coming to an end, parental leave). All doctoral junior researchers who can prove a close connection to JMU from the time of application until the end of the funding period (e.g. work/lab space) as well as doctoral researchers in difficult situations are eligible to apply. Before applying, female scholarship holders are required to attend a consultation at the office of the University Women's Representative. During the funding period, the scholarship holders are required to participate in at least three events organised by the SCIENTIA Career support programme.

Important – new:

A mandatory general information session for the upcoming funding round (March 2026) will be held for all interested women researchers. The session is intended to provide initial orientation and to clarify whether an application is generally eligible.

The information session will be offered on two dates: Monday, 2 February 2026, at 1:00 p.m., or Friday, 13 February 2026, at 9:30 a.m., each taking place in our seminar room (Klara-Oppenheimer-Weg 38). Participation in one of the two dates is mandatory. Please register by email at jmu-gleichstellungsfoerderung@uni-wuerzburg.de.

Duration, Scholarship Amount and further Information

The scholarship period is usually a maximum of 12 months. The amount depends on the qualification level and the personal situation of the scholarship holder.

You can find an overview of the scholarship in our brief information. Detailed information can be found in the information sheet.
